LATE is the first “social company” started in Chile less than one year ago, and is based on the idea that all profits from the sale of their bottled water would go towards a local children’s foundation.

Monthly Meeting - February 2009
Topic: Looking Ahead to Chile’s Presidential and Congressional Elections
Speaker: Julie Monteleone

Where do we stand as we near the end of the second month of 2009, in this year of challenging global economic, political and cultural transition? What the future will hold is anyone’s guess and everybody’s concern! In Chile the focus of much activity during this year will undoubtedly be driven by the Presidential and Congressional Elections scheduled to take place at the end of the year. A country’s political picture and issues—who’s who and what’s what for whom and why?—is seldom easy for foreigners to understand. Therefore, IPWA members welcomed hearing objective and clear information on this fundamental topic for all of us who are working and / or living in Chile. Julie Monteleone is an Economic and Political Specialist at the U.S. Embassy in Santiago, Chile. Prior to working at the U.S. Embassy, Julie was a Program Consultant at the Ford Foundation’s Office for the Andean Region and Southern Cone. Julie holds an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of California, San Diego, where she also did doctoral work, and also holds a B.A. from Wellesley College. Prior to attending graduate school, Julie worked for five years in the computer industry. While living in Chile off-and-on since 1991, Julie made a previous presentation for IPWA on human rights issues. And well before the present global age, Julie braved an insightful year in Katmandu, Nepal, where she learned to make sense in Nepalese and enjoyed the challenges of discovering the workings of an unknown country and people on the other side of the world.
